There’s a game of manipulation, back-stabbing, and one or two ways of starting a war from within, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure those out from the get-go because “Underworld: Blood Wars” never makes it that challenging to begin with. But what the film lacks in its writing, it makes up for in the fight sequences that make Kate Beckinsale’s Selene just downright relentless. “Underworld: Blood Wars” plot is superficial, it only impresses those who leave their brains in their cars in the parking lot before they enter the theater. So the CGI Lycans morphosis is part of this franchise’s appeals if you ask me. I lost count on how many “Underworld” movies we’ve received so far, but I must admit, I can never get over how scary the sight of humans morphing into those giant lycans, if that happens in real life around me, I’d be too petrified to run. But the big baddie in town, Tobias Menzies’ Marius is actually going after someone else related to Selene, someone whose blood he considers to be the game-changer. Theo James is also back as her ally David who will help her stop the eternal war between Lycans and vampires. Kate Beckinsale is back in her iconic badass role, Selene, as she fends off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clad and the Vampire faction that betrayed her. And Tobias Menzies’ villainous role, though one dimensional, does play its part in the film’s somewhat entertaining fights. Granted, the power struggle plot is generic, it’s not Lara Pulver’s first round as a femme fatale. The latest installment of this action franchise that many of us continue to watch just because Kate Beckinsale looks amazing in pleather tights, is actually not as bad as I thought it would be. The fact that “Underworld” sequels keep hitting the big screen instead of going straight to Red Box or VOD somewhat baffles me.
